Bridal Makeup: Trial, Timing, and Getting the Look Right

Wedding makeup needs to look natural in person, photograph beautifully under flash and natural light, and last 12+ hours without touch-ups. This guide explains how to get there.

When to book

Book your makeup artist 6-9 months before the wedding. Schedule your trial for 6-10 weeks before the wedding.

The trial

A trial lasts 1.5-2 hours. Bring:

• Inspiration photos but be realistic about your face
• A photo of your dress or a piece of the fabric/colour
• Any jewellery you plan to wear
• Photos of yourself in makeup you have liked previously

Wear a top in a colour similar to your dress. After the trial, look at yourself in different lights and photograph yourself under flash.

Communicating what you want

Specific beats vague. “Natural” means different things to different artists. Try phrases like:

• “I want to look like myself but more polished”
• “I want my eyes to be the focus”
• “I do not wear lipstick day to day so soft pinks would feel more like me”
• “I have oily skin around my nose, please use something matte there”

Making it last

• Primer is essential — both face primer and eye primer
• Setting spray after each layer
• Take a small touch-up kit: pressed powder, lipstick, blotting papers
• Drink water early in the day, less in the hour before photos
• Skincare prep starts 6+ months out

Trials cost £60-£150 separately. Wedding day makeup for the bride is £150-£350. Bridesmaids £50-£120 each. Group bookings (bride + 3 bridesmaids + mum) usually £400-£700.
